What it is used for

Morphine sulfate tablets are indicated for the management of: adult and pediatric patients weighing at least 50 kg and above with acute pain severe enough to require an opioid analgesic and for which alternative treatments are inadequate. adults with chronic pain severe enough to require an opioid analgesic and for which alternative treatments are inadequate.

Description

Morphine sulfate tablets are an opioid agonist, available in 15 mg and 30 mg for oral administration: 15 mg tablet: Each tablet contains 15 mg morphine sulfate, USP (equivalent to 11.25 mg morphine). 30 mg tablet: Each tablet contains 30 mg morphine sulfate, USP (equivalent to 22.5 mg morphine). Chemically, morphine sulfate is 7,8-didehydro-4,5α-epoxy-17-methylmorphinan-3,6α-diol sulfate (2:1) (salt) pentahydrate. Morphine sulfate, USP is a white to off-white crystalline solid. It is soluble in water and slightly soluble in alcohol, but is practically insoluble in chloroform. The octanol:water partition coefficient of morphine is 1.42 at physiologic pH and the pka is 7.9 for the tertiary nitrogen (the majority is ionized at pH 7.4).
