ketoconazole 20 MG/ML Medicated Shampoo
The same active ingredient is not automatically the same medicine. Strength, route and formulation all differ, and only a pharmacist or prescriber can tell you whether one of these is a substitute in your case. What we can tell you is what each costs.
There is a version sold without a prescription
24 over-the-counter products contain ketoconazole, at 10 mg/mL against the 20 mg/mL prescribed here.
The strengths are not the same. Do not assume one box replaces the other.
See the shelf pricesThe same drug costs far less in another form
Ketoconazole as a shampoo, suspension costs about 1.5× what the tablet costs per unit of active ingredient ($2.82 against $1.83 per gram).
Whether the form can be changed is a question for a prescriber — for a child, or anyone who cannot swallow a tablet, it often cannot.
Other strengths and forms of the same drug
Not equivalents — a different strength is a different prescription. Listed because the price per unit often differs sharply between them.
